Hi.
My name is Philip Addy and I am an experienced wood sculptor.
I
live in Onchan on the Isle of Man. That's
me hard at work at the lathe in my workshop!
NEWSFLASH-
I AM NOT SURE IF THE CONTACT ME LINK IS WORKING ON THIS SITE
SO IF YOU HAVE ANY INTEREST IN ANY ITEM HERE PLEASE JUST EMAIL
ME DIRECT AT philip.addy@manx.net
AND I WILL GET BACK TO YOU RIGHT
AWAY>
Background
I have always been a keen woodworker but moved on to working mainly with a lathe just a few years ago. Up
to recently its mostly been a hobby selling items at Craft fairs, festivals and on commissions for friends and
neighbours.
The carving is something I have done for fun over the years but only recently did I take this up seriously when I replaced the old woodcarver who retired after working for the Laxey & Lonan Heritage Trust for many years.
This started me on carving the
Manx legs on stools and bowls and the rest followed on from there.
I am please to report that the Manx museum sites around the island have taken some items and this is pleasing because the Museum sites are very prestigious outlets.
However I have found that sales are quite slow and very little happens outside the tourist season. For those who do not know the island, it is small, with a local population of around 70,000 .
This site is born in the hope that sufficient work commissions will result to fill my spare time!
Rationale
I look to make this pay whilst offering an excellent and affordable product. Where I can source timber locally and cheaply I will do so and pass on the savings.
Some exotic woods are costly so I avoid these where cheaper alternatives exist. I look to charge my time out at low labour rates of around £6 an hour and to recover raw material costs only.
Charging at skilled/professional levels per hour makes for an expensive product that may be slow to sell. I want enough orders to keep me busy so prices are as low as I can reasonable make them to make this scheme work.
I
hope you enjoy my site, and always welcome any comments or
suggestions.
